As CARE TO ACTION we believe in the power of Shram Daan, which means “return back to…” and it concerns children, women and communities. We request to all our communities to contribute to the wellbeing of the group of people who want to become responsible, autonomous and reliable.

BACK TO THE ROOTS

We consider it a part of “Character Development” in the early years, which helps build strengths like honesty, responsibility, fairness, and compassion—internal assets that lead to the happiness and well-being of children. They must connect with their past—get “back to their roots”—and contribute to uplifting those who are left behind.
In South Africa, a similar concept is known as “Ubuntu.” These human qualities foster responsible citizenship, encouraging children to participate in activities such as donating to food drives, recycling waste, and assisting during crises. This expectation is mandatory for all children supported in the Street2School program.

BACK TO THE GROUP

Women supported under the Street2School program, whether they meet spontaneously or within organized committees, are encouraged to contribute collectively to their group. This practice, already prevalent in many Self-Help Groups (SHGs), aims to enhance a sense of belonging, solidarity, and sustainability. By allocating a portion of the funds generated through the Women4Change work tools to a common fund, group members can expand the solidarity activities that unite them, focusing on aspects such as:

  • Cash Fund Management: Organizing and overseeing the collective financial resources of the group.
  • Interest-Free Loans to Members: Providing no-interest loans to group members in need, fostering mutual support and financial stability.
  • Health Aid Initiatives in their Village of Origin: Implementing health-related projects to benefit their home communities.
  • Other Emergency Activities: Addressing unforeseen situations requiring immediate collective action.
  • Issues Related to their Children’s Education: Collaborating to resolve challenges pertaining to their children’s schooling and educational needs.

Through these collective efforts, the women not only strengthen their group’s cohesion but also contribute meaningfully to the well-being and development of their communities.

BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

As part of the Street2School program’s commitment to community support, there is a strong emphasis on sustainability. Whether promoting healthy food practices, providing women with essential work tools, or enhancing the education of children and young people, these activities consistently aim to achieve sustainable objectives while benefiting the community. This approach aligns with the philosophy of reciprocating the support and resources received by giving back to the community. It fosters a cycle of education, respect, and belonging, encouraging individuals to contribute positively to their communities, thereby enhancing social value and promoting collective well-being.
